Eczema in babies can range from mild to severe. While there isn’t currently a cure, there are plenty of trigger factors, which we’ve discussed in previous posts. One of those trigger factors is food. But how much exactly is diet related to the symptoms of this skin condition? Can you do anything as a parent to help alleviate those symptoms? We will look at all that and more in this blog post.
Is Breast Milk Better than Formula?
As a new mom, you may already know that breast milk is always best. It offers your baby the ideal combination of fat, protein, and other nutrients. Plus, it provides a nice boost for their immune system. Speaking of the immune system, breastfeeding also helps make it less sensitive. That’s significant for eczema, which is often triggered by overactive defenses.
Can Your Diet Affect the Baby’s Eczema?
WebMD confirms that if you’re breastfeeding, you may want to avoid the following:
- Cow’s milk
- Peanuts
- Tree nuts
- Shellfish
Be sure to watch if your little one develops an itchy red rash on the chest and cheeks. Hives can also worsen your baby’s eczema symptoms. If you happen to see any of these, try to stay away from whatever you think may be causing the problem until you can get in touch with your doctor.
Which Foods Are Best for Your Baby?
Chris Adigun, clinical assistant professor of dermatology at the New York University School of Medicine, is quoted as saying, “The biggest issue for parents of children with eczema is they need to introduce one food at a time so they can know what is causing a problem. Stick with that food for at least four or five days before you move on to the next food.” Keep in mind that foods don’t cause eczema on their own. That said, some studies suggest that food allergies can make the condition worse. Those who have eczema usually have food allergies to dairy products, nuts, and shellfish. Talk with your child’s doctor before you stop feeding them specific foods. Don’t lose sight of the fact that children and infants, in particular, need certain foods to grow and develop naturally.
Natural Treatment for Eczema
Even if you find that a change in diet doesn’t provide the relief in symptoms you were hoping for, there are still other strategies. Note that an eczema skin care plan might include regular bathing, moisturizing, and lifestyle changes. Though doing all this can seem challenging at times, your efforts will help prevent flare-ups and keep your child comfortable.
How SOOTHEMS is Changing Eczema Therapy
We recently developed a therapeutic treatment to help youngsters with, particularly sensitive skin due to skin conditions such as eczema. Soothems are made from a smart fabric called TEWLTect. This blend of high-performance polymer fibers is enhanced with a unique combination of chitosan and zinc oxide. These properties provide a soothing, positive effect when the skin naturally releases moisture. It’s important to know that TEWLTect helps reduce itching, control bacterial growth, and soothe the skin during the healing process. What makes our eczema clothing different, though, is that the “magic print” found on our smart fabric reacts to body temperature. What that means is that some print color images disappear right before your child’s eyes. This ties into the magical powers we hope to create Soothems garments.
Our team understands that it can be exhausting trying to research what to use for eczema. We believe in the therapeutic power of an imaginative story that entertains, empathizes, and normalizes life with these types of skin conditions. Whether it’s baby eczema, infant eczema, or child eczema, there's no question that the condition isn’t any fun. Children with eczema have a difficult time managing stress levels and getting a good night’s sleep. Our solution is to have your child put on their Soothers garment and then read them one of our special Soothems bedtime story books. We hope that this will delight and comfort your child, allowing them to feel at peace and sleep through the night. Our smart fabric will therapeutically help make your child’s skin healthier.
If you’re looking to make your child more comfortable and happier, see what Soothems can do for your family.
